In 1993 Apple launched a product that I am sure was a precursor to the iPad. With the technology they needed to make it really work, sadly still a little too young. The product in question was the Apple Newton.

It was marketed as a personal digital assistant with handwriting recognition. One of its distinct features at the time. A feature that unfortunately if I am to believe the press, didn’t work well enough. Newton was destined to become an Apple Lemon.

Fast forward to 2021 and I noticed the Vision framework has a module for recognizing text and numbers in images.

You know handwriting recognition — that Newton feature, that was allegedly its downfall. Join me on a discovery tour to see if I can use today’s technology to teach an iPad using Vision framework to do handwriting recognition, to become well —the first step perhaps to becoming the son of Newton.

The Brief

Ok — stepping back what are the challenges here, how do I plan to do it.
